Eye Examinations and Contact Lenses

Glanz Optometrist provides comprehensive eye examinations and would include the following:

  • Detailed history of visual complaints, surgery, therapy, medications
  • Visual acuities (clarity of vision)
  • Visual field screening
  • Binocular vision testing to determine eye alignment
  • Accommodative testing (eye focus)
  • Refraction to determine if any optical correction is required
  • Internal and external eye examination to assess eye health
  • Measurement of intra-ocular pressures (one of the indicators of glaucoma)

Once completed, various options would be discussed with you to provide the best solution for your needs – be it spectacles, contact lenses, vision therapy, or any combination thereof.

Glanz Optometrists offers spectacle lens products from various lens laboratories which include Essilor, Seiko and Zeiss.  Visit their websites using our links for further information on their products.

It is recommended to have an eye examination at least every 18-24 months, Contact lens wearers, diabetics and those with underlying pathology would require annual examinations.

The duration of an examination is about 30-45 minutes. Should a behavioural visual assessment be required, then this examination is typically 1-1.5 hours long. Children who require full functional visual assessments can take longer than this.

If you prefer contacts or would like to include this option for occasional wearing (like when playing sports), then there are a wide variety of contacts available. With new contact lens advances, just about any prescription can be provided in a contact lens format.

Behavioural Optometry

Behavioural optometry determines whether the visual system is providing clear and comfortable vision for today’s visual demands. There are many reasons why the visual system may not be functioning at it’s best. A full visual assessment will determine where the short-comings may be (eye muscle fatigue, squints, poor eye focus, eye movement issues, visual processing deficits, and much more!).  As near demands with digital devices increases, the human visual system will make changes in order to adapt to these demands. These adaptations are unwanted and unnatural for the human body and therefore behavioural optometry includes taking preventative measures to reduce these unwanted adaptations.

All human behaviour is dominated by the visual system – it tells the body where you are in space, what it is you are looking at and what movement is required by the body to navigate effectively in the real world. It is the quality and efficiency of vision and not just sight that is taken into account when undergoing a behavioural assessment.  Additional testing of binocular vision, eye focus, eye movements and visual processing is required to determine overall visual function.

Karen takes a holistic approach to visual assessments and provides recommendations for the best solutions for each individual patient’s needs – be it spectacles, contact lenses, vision therapy or any combination thereof.

Vision Therapy

Vision Therapy (VT) is a series of personalised exercises prescribed by an optometrist (usually a behavioural or developmental optometrist) to improve visual function. Improvement of visual skills is achieved by relearning and enhancing the use of the visual system and other associated functional systems for optimal integration.

The goal of VT is to minimise visual symptoms, enhance visual function and ultimately improve quality of life.

Vision therapy works on areas like:

  • eye movement
  • eye focus
  • teaming/binocular vision and convergence
  • eye-hand coordination
  • visual information processing skills
  • visual attention

A good vision therapy program is tailor-made for each individual and includes the use of lenses, prisms and instrumentation.  Often we would work in conjunction with an Occupational Therapist.

Driver’s Vision Screening

Glanz Optometrist offers free vision screenings for drivers’ licences.

An official form will completed and provided to you once you meet the minimum visual requirements. In the future, this service should become available online with the traffic department.

It’s always a good idea to make an appointment with us for your screening so that you are guaranteed immediate assistance.

Should you not pass the screening, an eye examination would be recommended to assess if vision can be improved with spectacles or contact lenses or if there is any underlying pathology that is causing reduced vision.
