Understanding Retinal Eye Diseases: What Every Patient Should Know
With a focus on World Retina Week this month, it provides an opportunity to learn more about retinal eye diseases. Your retina plays a vital role in your vision — it’s the light-sensitive layer at the back of your eye that sends visual signals to your brain. When the retina is healthy, it allows you to see clearly. But when disease strikes, it can lead to serious and devastating vision problems or even blindness if left untreated.
At Glanz Optometrist, we believe that early detection and patient education are key to preserving your sight. Here’s what you need to know about retinal eye diseases.
What Is the Retina?
Think of the retina as the camera film (or digital sensor) of your eye. It captures light and images and sends them through the optic nerve to your brain, where they’re processed into what you “see.” Because the retina is so essential, even small problems can significantly affect your vision.
Common Retinal Diseases
- Diabetic Retinopathy
If you have diabetes, your risk of retinal damage increases. High blood sugar can cause blood vessels in the retina to leak or grow abnormal fragile blood vessels, leading to vision loss. Regular eye exams are crucial for early detection.
- Macular Degeneration (AMD)
Age-related macular degeneration can affect the entire retina, but when it affects the central part of your vision it can be debilitating, making tasks like reading or recognising faces difficult. It’s the leading cause of permanent vision loss in people over 50.
- Retinal Detachment
This is a medical emergency. When the retina pulls away from the back of the eye, it can cause sudden vision loss. Symptoms include flashes of light, multiple floaters, or a “curtain” over your vision.
- Retinal Vein Occlusion
This occurs when a vein in the retina becomes blocked, often leading to swelling and vision problems. It shares risk factors with heart disease and diabetes.
Symptoms to Watch For
Retinal diseases often develop silently, but here are some warning signs:
- Blurred or distorted vision
- Dark spots or floaters
- Flashes of light
- Difficulty seeing at night
- A shadow or curtain over part of your visual field
If you experience any of these symptoms, schedule an eye exam immediately. Early treatment can prevent further damage.
Protecting Your Retinal Health
Here’s how you can help safeguard your sight:
- Get regular comprehensive eye exams
- Manage chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension
- Eat a diet rich in leafy greens, fish, and antioxidants
- Avoid smoking
- Wear sunglasses to protect against UV damage
